Princípio Marley começou suas experimentações musicais com o ska e passou aos poucos para o reggae enquanto o estilo se desenvolvia. Marley é talvez mais conhecido pelo seu trabalho com o grupo de reggae The Wailers, que incluía outros dois célebres músicos, Bunny Wailer e Peter Tosh. Livingstone e Tosh posteriormente deixariam o grupo para iniciarem uma bem-sucedida carreira solo. A maioria do trabalho inicial de Marley foi produzida por Coxsone Dodd no Studio One.
