Tiroteio e violência eleitoral

Em 1976, dois dias antes de um show gratuito organizado por Bob Marley e o então primeiro-ministro jamaicano Michael Manley durante as eleições gerais, Marley, sua esposa Rita e o empresário Don Taylor foram baleados na residência do astro em Hope Road. Marley sofreu ferimentos leves no braço e no tórax. Don Taylor levou a maior parte dos tiros em sua perna e torso ao andar acidentalmente na frente da linha de fogo. Ele foi internado em estado grave mas recuperou-se. Rita Marley também foi internada após um grave ferimento na cabeça. Acredita-se que o tiroteio teve motivações políticas (os políticos jamaicanos eram em geral violentos na época, especialmente quando as eleições se aproximavam). O concerto foi visto como um gesto de apoio ao primeiro ministro, e supostamente Marley foi alvo dos defensores do partido conservador da Jamaica, o Jamaican Labour Party. Embora a polícia nunca tenha pego os atiradores, os seguidores de Marley mais tarde "acertaram as contas" com eles nas ruas de Kingston. Além disso, o Candidato Michael Manley foi eleito.
